I&#8217;ve been writing some software for a medical accelerometer device for a couple of different research projects. Once the results of those studies get published I&#8217;ll link to them here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pros<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Small form factor &#8211;\u00a032\u00d736\u00d712.5mm<\/li>\n<li>Lightweight &#8211; 22 grams and ~30 grams with the strap<\/li>\n<li>Water resistant &#8211; I fully submerged it for about 5 seconds ( accidentaly )<\/li>\n<li>Wifi &#8211; used to automatically upload data<\/li>\n<li>adb support &#8211; standard<\/li>\n<li>Standard sensors &#8211; the module has most of the sensors you&#8217;ll find in current phones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cons<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor battery life &#8211; never more than 48 hours<\/li>\n<li>Incomplete Sensor API implementation &#8211; <a title=\"Accelerometer howto\" href=\"https:\/\/support.wimm.com\/entries\/21178841-howto-using-the-accelerometer\" target=\"_blank\">Accelerometer problem<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Cloud based configuration &#8211; should be an option not a requirement<\/li>\n<li>power \u00a0button &#8211; the module needs to be removed from the strap to get to the power button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of all of the small form factor android devices I&#8217;ve been working with this is my favourite. As a developer device it&#8217;s great as it has all of the hardware sensors you&#8217;ll have in a phone and lots of great code examples. The hardware form factor is also interesting because of its&#8217;s size and that and i2c interfaces is\u00a0accessible.<\/p>\n<p>As a consumer device it still has some annoying quirks. I&#8217;ve never had the battery last more than 48 hours and typical was around 36. A watch that needs plugging in everyday has limited usefulness in my book. For my particular application it wasn&#8217;t a problem as it wasn&#8217;t ever used untethered for extensive periods.<\/p>\n<p>Data entry is one of the most painful experiences on this device. I&#8217;m not talking about writing a novel here just try to get a wpa key entered. It&#8217;s got a rotating dial with the alaphabet and numbers, takes a long time to get from Aa to Zz.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately it looks like it may no longer be being produced. Ted Ladd who was head of\u00a0WIMM Developer Relations now lists his job as a <a title=\"Tedd Ladd\" href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=2587141\" target=\"_blank\">university professor<\/a>. I also contacted WiMM and they&#8217;ve stated &#8220;We&#8217;ve decided to move\u00a0in a different strategic direction, which I can&#8217;t discuss&#8221;.\u00a0I hope it&#8217;s a WiMM two.<\/p>\n<p>Edit:<\/p>\n<p>It looks like WiMM is discontinuing their support for WiMM one developers. I found a version of the <a title=\"WiMM one addon\" href=\"http:\/\/akkea.ca\/files\/addon_wimm_one_7.zip\" target=\"_blank\">WiMM addon<\/a> package. \u00a0I also did a recursive get of the <a title=\"WiMM developer docs\" href=\"http:\/\/akkea.ca\/files\/wimm.tgz\" target=\"_blank\">documentation<\/a>\u00a0before they take that down. I also have a copy of their <a title=\"WiMM kernel\" href=\"http:\/\/akkea.ca\/files\/WIMM330_1.0.3.tar.gz\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Opensource Package&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here are the <a href=\"http:\/\/akkea.ca\/wimm_setup\/sdk.html\" target=\"_blank\">sdk<\/a>\u00a0and the<a href=\"http:\/\/akkea.ca\/wimm_setup\/usb.html\" target=\"_blank\"> usb<\/a>\u00a0setup instructions for windows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been working with this device for about 9 months now.
